 flight

june 2009

by Colleen Burke

A woman is bound by love and duty to care for a man trapped by his body.
Once upon a time a shapeshifting crow visited their home.
If you grew wings would you fly away?
An uplifting backyard tale.
The audience described it as, 'emotionally overwhelming', 'made me awkward then happy', 'WOW! ...(thanks for the sanga mate)', and, 'made me want to create a cheese circus and wear a mouse as bling..."

Bower

family portrait

april 2009

Bower was a clandestine performance installation about homes and homelessness, nests and memories.

Bower existed in two halves. The first half occurred at 4 Sturrock St where the guests were greeted at the gate and led into an anthropomorphic world of man and bird.

The final half took place in the burnt out shell of what was once a great mansion.

"I didn't know whether I was meant to be a person or a bird."

wealth of nations

Wealth of Nations

march 2009

presented in collaboration with Fenestra Theatre Productions

"There's no such thing as society,” Margaret Thatcher.

On Friday 20th March Sanctum Theatre celebrated the 233rd anniversary of Adam Smith’s seminal work, Wealth of Nations.

The ship may be sinking, the ‘invisible hand’ might have lost its grip on the invisible wheel, but there is an alternative. On the 20th Sanctum broke away from the globular economic system and realised Smith’s ideal economic order on a small patch of turf in Brunswick.

 The Plains

a play

Ben Hjorth and maniquin

directed by
Lachlan Plain
August 2008

“Anyone surrounded from childhood by an abundance of level land must dream alternatively of exploring two landscapes – one continually visible but not accessible and the other always invisible even though one crossed and recrossed it daily.”

The Plains: a play is Lachlan Plain’s adaptation of Gerald Murnane’s The Plains: a novel  (Patrick White Award 1999, NSW Premier’s Award 2007), via the paintings of Philip Hunter and the music of Sebastian Jorgensen.

A filmmaker travels from his coastal exterior ‘towards the heart of some remote private plain…'
Presented by VCA Drama and Sanctum Theatre as part of the 'VCA Drama 2008 Master of Theatre Practice Performance Season'.
