Sanctum Studio is a dynamic new arts space in the North Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It’s a factory in a castle…yes, a castle, with turrets and towers covered in vines.
Sanctum Studio creates public art and street art for commercial premises, roadways and public open spaces. We also create giant puppets and special props for film, theatre and special events. We work for government, commercial and private clients, such as Melbourne Museum, White Night, Moomba, Bulleen Art & Garden and various local councils.
Sanctum Studio also facilitates collaborative arts projects alongside community groups and schools. We work with children, youth, families, ethnic groups, ESL classes, and people experiencing disability or mental health issues. We work with them to create public art, sculptural lanterns, giant puppets and picture story books. In 2019 we partnered with Little Projector Company to produce Trail of Lights, a community-led lantern and light festival along the Federation Trail in Williams Landing and Truganina, Victoria, Australia (trailoflights.org.au).
Sanctum Studio is home to Steez-Box Coffee (Open 7am – 12pm, Mon – Tue) and Sanctum Theatre, a visual performance company presenting live art in everyday spaces since 2006. It is managed by artist, author and puppeteer, Lachlan Plain (lachlanplain.com).
The studio is available for short-term and long-term leases to artists and creative people. See below for information on renting Sanctum Studio.
We are also working towards establishing a residency program. Contact us to stay informed about the residency program.
